LECTURES
Lecture 1 - Introduction to Character Design
Principles of character design:
1) Shapes
- Define a character's silhouette
- It is used to identify a character from one another
-
What sets the iconic look
2) Color
- Important role in determining who are the heroes/protagonists or villains/antagonists
- Have qualities that can cause certain emotions in people
- Visual elements can help exaggerate and make the character outstanding and memorable
- All shapes, lines, color, motifs, patterns must compliment each other
- Balance of visual elements that has a visual hierarchy
- Character behaviors/quirks/personalities that are visually shown helps win the heart of an audience
- The audience will interpret themselves
Lecture 2 - Visual Techniques: Composition (I)
The rule of thirds is a guideline artists use to compose imagery, to ensure a piece is visually appealing and balanced.
Lecture 3 - Visual Techniques: Composition (II) - Perspectives
Da Vinci making use of color contrast, perspective and subject focus in the drawing creating depth in the painting.
This painting is effective because it uses the theory of the 3 planes; the foreground, middle ground and the background.
As long as they mimic "3 dimensions", a sense of depth is
created.
INSTRUCTIONS
Task 1: Exercise 1 & 2
We had to design and create ONE unique character by using the given sets of shapes.

FEEDBACK
REFLECTION
Ms. Anis started the lecture asking why does Instagram photos
look so good? She began explaining that rule of thirds, emphasis,
contrast, shadow play, use of shadow play and other design
principles are involved.

Fig. 2.4 Environment art
When creating an environment or landscape, environment art
(foreground, middle ground and background) is an easy way to
establish depth and encourage strong compositional
planning.
Lecture 3 - Visual Techniques: Composition (II) - Perspectives
Fig. 3.1 Paintings before 14th century
The art of the Byzantine, Medieval and Gothic periods was rich
and beautiful, but the images made no attempt to create the
illusion of depth and space.
Fillipo Brunelleshi (1377-1446) decided to use linear
perspective to create this artwork. It depicted the Baptistery
in Florence from the front gate of the unfinished cathedral.
The linear perspective system projected the illusion of depth
onto a two dimensional plane by use of vanishing points.

1. Sketches
Fig. 1.1 Character design digital sketches - PDF, Week 2
(2/9/2021)
I came up with 4 character designs. I did not come up with
sketches first because I think working with the vormator shapes
in the beginning helped me in forming ideas on how the creature
should like.
The first creature, Chocofly, was inspired by a BT21 character.
I love the colour palette of Shooky, so I incorporated the same
exact colour palette into Chocofly. The one strand of hair on
Chocofly was an idea I got from Upin-Ipin where one of the
brothers had one strand of hair on top of his head. Moving onto
Octotate, I wanted to create a cute underwater creature that has
the power to calm the ocean so I thought about what animals are
underrated in movies - and octopus came into mind. I named it
Octatate as it's an octupus that meditates. Mer-shaw and De-worm
were just extra creatures I had in mind to choose from for
further development. My fellow classmates seem to love De-worm a
lot but character design wise - Ms. Anis chose Chocofly and
Octatate for me to further develop.
2. Digitization Progress
Fig. 1.2 Experimentation of character design - PDF, Week 3 (9/9/2021)
I chose Octotate for further development. First, I had to change
the expression that Octotate had originally as the expression
didn't exactly the name it had. So I tried studying a few
expressions and see which fits "calming" the best. I added
tentacles on the legs to make it look more alive and I also did
colour studies but I wasn't satisfied with the results. I asked
Ms. Anis for suggestion on what to improve because the design
still looks a bit too simplistic, and she recommended me to ...

Week 2
Specific Feedback: Ms. Anis approved of my first 2 character designs (Chocofly &
Octotate) for further development. "Mer-shaw" is not a good design
for character but the color palette was fine. "De-worm" wasn't
completed but Ms. Anis and my fellow classmates loved it.
Week 4
Specific Feedback: Can continue with submission, no
changes needed. Good color palette and contrast.
Experience
Observation
Findings
The lecture slides that were put together were very fun and entertaining. I love how Ms. Anis drew on the slides very casually and how Ms. Jennifer shows us the digitalizing process in Adobe Illustrator during tutorial.
Observation
I observed that I'm when it comes to details even with the simplest design, I'm meticulous. I try to keep making changes when not much is needed.
I found that the tutorial sessions where Ms. Jennifer illustrates as we watch, it really helps me to learn more functions of Adobe Illustrator accidentally.
