FEEDBACK
Week 2 - Research Proposal
Specific Feedback: I have to look at other design
phenomenon/output in order to discuss about design thinking.
Research problem shouldn't be like a hypothesis. Statement is too
bold of a claim. Reword research problem. Change topic as the
current one doesn't really enable further discussion. May want to
include lifestyle into this, something to do with our own Malaysian
identity.
Week 3 - Research Proposal
Week 3 - Research Proposal
Specific Feedback: Focus of research problem is leaning more towards marketing.
Instead of focusing on the logo spectrum, maybe widening it to
branding - shouldn't focus just on the logo. Read more about
branding and read more research articles. Research problem maybe
focus on cultural identity? How is graphic design applied to
improve?
Week 4
Public Holiday (Malaysia Day, 16 September 2021)
Week 5 - Research Proposal Submission
Specific Feedback: For the research proposal, tweak the study to look at the value of illustrations as a form of public art instead of public's views as it's very subjective and doesn't allow much further discussion. Reword the research problem to "The Role and Impact of Malaysian Street Art in The 21st Century: A Study of Illustrations" (something like this). For the critical reviews, replace a few reference links, but if I think some of the theories of certain papers might help in the dissertation, keep it for future use. Reference links should be within the last 5 years, and find 2 other research articles about the different types of street art, the value of what kind of artwork that could bring about cultural appreciation.
Week 5 - Revised Final Research Proposal
Specific Feedback: Hi Yeanne Tung, here's the feedback for your revised proposal: Overall a better proposal compared to the first attempt. There is a direction and clarity is provided in the problem statement, supported by relevant research. The ROs and RQs are related to the problem statement. The second RO would be better if worded as “To explore…”.

The second RO would be better if worded as “To explore…”.
Week 5 - Critical Review
General Feedback: Question whether the methodology
being used is suitable or not. Is it practical? Is it fair? Do
not narrate as first person. Do not use writers, use authors
or researchers.
Specific Feedback: Replace a few reference links
for the critical review, but if I think some of the theories
of certain papers might help in the dissertation, keep it for
future use. Reference links should be within the last 5 years,
and find 2 other research articles about the different
types of street art, the value of what kind of artwork that
could bring about cultural appreciation.
Week 6 - Critical Review
General Feedback: Don't have to mention about
the structure of the paper, focus on the argument and
discussion.
Specific Feedback: For critical review #1, a bit
more can be added in the summary section in case I want to use
it for final review. "The literature review was from multiple
sources..." Why did you say that? You're supposed to critique
it, you can say the paper covered all the necessary information
and it's thorough. When giving examples of the four dimensions,
meaning they have a system to conduct this research and to
organise their discussion. I indirectly say why I liked the
paper in examples, but I did not mention why, so write it in a
sentence. Last sentence in the critique section, what argument
is that? Is it because they want to prove the value of street
art? What is it? Be a bit specific. For critical review #2,
while I mentioned about the weak points in the critique, I could
highlight what is significance of the paper even though it has
this weak point (can be mentioned in the final review). Reword
"unclear", more like not as well planned. I can include the
conclusion into the final review. Find some articles from
Indonesia or Norway if possible, their street art is rich.
Week 7 - Critical Review
Specific Feedback: Title of research paper should be
cited in title case capitalization. Reword "studies" with
presents/highlights/presents. Methodology can be mentioned if it
strengthens or affect the findings. (clearly highlight it as a
weakness of the paper). State the methodology used to achieve
results before mentioning the findings.
Week 9 - Critical Review After Submission
Specific Feedback: Hi Yeanne Tung, here's my
feedback to your Critical Review: The common themes identified
from research articles reflect the student’s understanding of
the contents. The research articles are suitable and relevant
to the current research. The review and evaluation is good,
with the highlight on the main findings, the strengths and
weaknesses of each paper.
Week 9 - Research Implementation
Specific Feedback: Know when to use research that
are age old or recent. Very well explained justification. For RQ
#2, a short visual question with the help of images of the
different types street art can be placed at the end of the
survey (e.g. Would you consider this as street art? with a
yes/no answer, or with the use of a rating scale or a short 5
word answer - describe the value that could be found in this
artwork, how would it add value to the community). Later on, I
may want to observe the answers myself in the discussion
section. 7 to 10 questions are allowed excluding questions about
general demographic questions. List out pros and cons by surveys
and interviews, not when it's combined. If interviews are done
through email, it has to be well structured (e.g In this case,
how are they going to answer it). Justify all the questions in
the questionnaire (why is that question included, back it up
with citations for support).
Week 10 - Research Implementation
Specific Feedback: It is good to write in
paragraphs with in-text citations. Instead of focusing on
certain demographics, target participants can be general
public aged from 18 to 70 years. Add in more age groups in
demography section. Add question below S1 Q1 "What is your
exposure to street art?" / "How do you get knowledge on
these illustrations?". How does public define what are
street art illustrations. Justify the images used. Use
images to aid certain questions. Reword some questions. Add
introduction to survey. (Note: If I want email interview to
be part of the research in the future, maybe interview
Ernest Zacharevic/Cloakwork, on why is it important for
local culture to be reflected on to artwork.)
Week 13 - Final Compilation
Specific Feedback: Add livelier street art
element in slide design.
REFLECTION
Observation: I observed that I do better by listening to Ms Jinchi giving feedback s to my fellow classmates on their critical reviews so I know what to do and what not to do in mine the next time I show my progress.
Findings: I found that we do research in our everyday lives, just not that systematic.
Findings: I did not notice this before starting this module but I found that we do research in our everyday lives, just not as systematic as what we did in this module. I think research is crucial as a tool to help me build knowledge and let me inquire about the right information. It’s beneficial as research can help develop my critical thinking skills, give me knowledge and information I could use in my daily life.
Assignment 1: Proposal
Experience: The lecture slides are very straightforward
and clear. I'm also thankful to Ms Jinchi for always assuring
us during tutorials, and she gives feedback in a way that
helps us easily understand what has to be done by the next
week. This assignment was a bit challenging to me, as I
expected to have less writing and more designing when I
enrolled in a design course, but I understand this assignment
is to help us develop our own opinions and to critique things
to evoke our thoughts and further discuss it.
Observation: I observed that I understood the
assignment better when Ms Jinchi commented on my fellow peers'
work. From there, I knew what I should do and what I shouldn't
do.
Findings: After a few promptings from Ms. Jinchi, I
realized I became independent to decide on my own at the end
of the day. That shows that I tried to understand the topic
myself, and I think that is good because I'm taking ownership
of what I'm learning.
Assignment 2: Critical Review
Experience: The critical review got slightly easier for
me after I got the gist of the research proposal, as it was
slightly confusing for me how this module works, but Ms Jinchi
managed to clear my concerns on some parts of the critical
review.
Observation: I observed that I do better by listening to Ms Jinchi giving feedback s to my fellow classmates on their critical reviews so I know what to do and what not to do in mine the next time I show my progress.
Findings: I found that we do research in our everyday lives, just not that systematic.
Assignment 3: Research Implementation - Primary Data
I've learnt how to ask relevant questions in the survey
questionnaire, putting thought and effort into designing the
research method can definitely help me waste less resources
and time. The research helped me to understand and draw
broader conclusions about my respondents.
Final Reflection
Experience: As I’m taking a design course, I was
expecting more design than more writing so starting with the
first given assignment, I was slightly overwhelmed with what
we had to do. I was lost and I did not know where to start. It
took me up to 3 weeks to actually set on my research topic and
Ms Jinchi had been a great help to me, she cleared up all the
misunderstandings that I had about the assignment and clearly
guided me and let me know the right information so I could
work on assignments. I wasn’t really fond of this module in
the beginning because there was so much writing to do but
after a few weeks, I got the gist of how the assignments work,
and because of Ms Jinchi’s clear guidance, I think I like this
module a little more - besides all the reading.
Observation: Within the given assignments, I observed
that it is time consuming to carry out research, followed by
collecting and compiling the data. In the beginning, I
struggled to pick out relevant research papers for my
research, but I’ve learnt to look at the abstract and the
conclusion to better understand what the research paper is
about. Besides that, doing an analysis for the survey results
was exciting, it was really interesting to know what the
respondents think about street art, and the results were
beyond what I expected.
