PROJECT 2B - POSTER DESIGN (10%)

1. Research about your topic
- Study and gather all related information about your topic
- Write a summary about your topic.
- Highlight the key point of your summary.
- Define the title
- Define the slogan
- Define the details
- Define the Call For Action

Fig. 5.1 Poster references

There are 2 types of poster designs that I will try to attempt to design.

Fig. 5.2 Research summary, Week 6 (26/9/2021)

Title: Why Bully With Tech
Slogan: Understand the effects of cyberbullying and what can be done to prevent it.
Details: (none)
Call For Action: Call +603 79272929 or send an email to cyber999@cybersecurity.my

2. Concept
- Create a sketch for each layers (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
- Sketch your mock up poster

a. Sketches

Fig. 6 Poster mockup sketches, Week 7 (3/10/2021)

I tried to come up with two types of poster, one being serious, one with a little humor. For the concept of the 2nd poster, I decided to use a cooking utensil that Malaysians are most familiar with, which is the "mamak" cooking fryer and I added a "tsk" to make it more personal.

b. Mockups

Fig. 7.1 Photo used and added horn element

I took this picture with the help of my phone and a tripod. I wasn't really satisfied with the lighting and how the angle of the laptop was slightly off but I could fix it with Photoshop.

Fig. 7.2 Mockups, Week 8 (11/10/2021)

I chose red for the text in the background so it could create a contrast in the dark background, while red also kind of signifies anger. The horn element wasn't mentioned in the feedback session but I decided to give it a try as my eyes in the photo doesn't look as fierce I would like it to be, so I thought maybe a pair of devil horns might help in conveying the right image I want to be in the poster. I played around with the title placement but I like it when the title is placed at the bottom so that the harsh words at the back could flow through the upper half of the page.

Fig. 7.3 Chosen mockup, Week 8 (11/10/2021)

Among all the mockups, I think this version looks the cleanest, not too much complicated things going on. The devil horn element was slightly distracting as it's in such a bright color which could mislead the audience.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
General Feedback:  Hi everyone, thank you for your submission. Everyone is following the right technique from the given tutorial. So, there will be no individual feedback for this exercise. Good job on your D.I.Y photoshoot!

Week 6
Specific Feedback: You can come up with 2 types of poster, one being serious, the other one being not as serious. Try using slang to be more localized, so Malaysians feel more connected and relatable to the poster.

Week 7
General Feedback: Stock images should be used as little as possible as this is a photography class, our photography skills should be the main point of the poster and marks will be deducted if online images are used.
Specific Feedback: Mr Fauzi have allowed me to proceed with the third mockup poster, my second mockup poster wasn't really clear as to what I want to show, but the third one it clearly shows what I want to do. He have recommended me to wear a whole black outfit (jacket, mask and hat) typing on the keyboard (can be laptop or desktop).

Week 9
Specific Feedback: Exclude the horn element, maybe making the eyes slightly red? Use the lighter color option for "TECH". Translate the harsh words to "#@!$%^&%^#@#$!!!!". Play with size and placement of slogan. Can try playing with the size of the harsh words going in and out.
Feedback after modification before submission: Hi Yeanne Tung, thanks for your efforts. You may choose the final one (Opacity 20%) for your final submission. Thanks!

REFLECTION

Through this project, I get to explore with angles and photography and I also learnt a lot on Photoshop in terms of skills, I get to search on YouTube what I needed to apply to my design. This project was tricky at the same time fun to manage. I had trouble figuring out how the background should feel like, but Mr Fauzi gave me suggestions on how I could improve it and his feedback meant a lot.
