LECTURES

Lecture 6 - 3 Acts Structure

Central Theme
- What the story is really about.

Conflict
- What drives the story.
- Creates tension and build suspense, which are the elements that make a story interesting.
- Engages audience.
- 0 conflict, 0 care.

3-Acts Structure

Fig. 1 3-acts structure chart

Act I: Setup
The setup involves introduction of the characters, their story world, and some kind of ‘’ inciting incident,” typically a conflict that propels us into the second act.

Act II: Rising Tension
The middle of your story should raise the stakes, you want the audience to keep watching. This is the main chunk of the story and often leads us to the worst possible thing that can happen to the character.

Act III: Conflict
Highest point of tension, and the major decisive turning point for the protagonist.

Resolution
And the end should bring some kind of catharsis or resolution, (regardless if the ending is happy or sad).

Lecture 7  - Visual Techniques: Transitions

1) Mind Map
Start with the most important topic of you project that you will  be designing
- A character?
- A type of product?

2) The Concept
Answer all the Ws & H questions will help you generate one sentence AIM/CONCEPT that sells!
- What?
- Who?
- When?
- Where?
- Who?

Task 3: Gravel Novel (Horror Theme)

1. Research and 3-Acts Structure

Fig. 1.1 3-acts structure, Week 11 (5/11/2021)

Although I watch horror movies, I have a love-hate relationship with the genre so I had some trouble coming up with a horror story. What I did was to look at different stories on Webtoon and Google to gain some inspiration and come up with a storyline that I can create with my own personal touch.

Fig. 1.2 References from Pinterest, Week 11 (5/11/2021)

There's 3 important elements in my comic - Ophelia, dark figure and the energy drink. Above shows some of the references that I found on Pinterest of some minimal character design, and since I couldn't draw human figures very well, I decided to use shapes that are easier to replicate.

Fig. 1.3 Comic references from Webtoon's "Everything is Fine", Week 11 (5/11/2021)

This webtoon series utilizes the most simplest illustrations to narrate the story which inspired me to also use greyscale in my comic. Less colors used in the comic could also be easier on the eyes for the readers.

2. Script and Sketches

Fig. 2.2 "A Drowsy Night" sketches, Week 11 (12/11/2021)

I made a script for my comic so it is easier for me to draw out scenes for my rough sketches. Then I used the app "Sketchbook" on my iPad to create the rough sketches - it is pretty rough (lol). I plan to use different shades of grey to illustrate this webtoon.

3. Digitization Progress

Fig. 3.4 Organizing pages and panels on Adobe Illustrator, Week 15 (1/12/2021)

I had quite some trouble illustrating human actions so references from Google and Pinterest really helped a lot and I observed that it is super important to label and organize your layers so everything is in its allocated place so later on when I export it to After Effects it wouldn't be messy.

Task 4: Final Project - Motion Comic

Fig. 5.1 Arranging and organizing files into After Affects, Week 15 (4/12/2021)

Instead of doing one composition for each panel then compiling it in the end, what I did was putting in all panels in one composition one by one after animating each panel. It much easier to track back the transitions I used.

Fig. 5.2 Parent and link, Week 15 (4/12/2021)

Thanks to Ms Jennifer, I got to learn something from the tutorial video she did. The parent and link function really made my life easier, in a sense where I don't have to move each layer one by one, I could link it all to one layer and when I move it, everything else will follow.

Fig. 5.3 Masking in After Affects, Week 15 (4/12/2021)

The hand was supposed to be out of the borders but I fixed it up with the masking tool. For the animation, I moved the anchor point to the bottom right so when I rotate it, it rotates at the anchor point. I made 2 keyframes for 1 knock, and I copy pasted it several times so the knocks are more consistent. For some reason before I start to use After Effects, I thought masking would be hard but you literally just use the rectangle tool to mask the layers.

Fig. 5.4 Inserting audio in Final Cut Pro, Week 15 (5/12/2021)

I know we could edit audio in After Effects too, but I'm used to Final Cut Pro on my Macbook Air, so I decided to use that.

FEEDBACK

Week 10
Specific Feedback: I need to establish what the dark figure is. Maybe in the beginning show scenes of main character drinking cans of energy drinks with a "character" on it, then the dark figure could be character from the can.

REFLECTION

This module itself taught me a lot using different software, I only knew Photoshop but I haven't got the opportunity to explore with Adobe Illustrator but because of this module, I get to play around with it. I have to say Adobe Illustrator is much better than Adobe Photoshop - I like the pen tool, easy to use. Learning to use new software is the biggest challenge to me although there are many tutorials on YouTube that I could follow, but it's that courage to learn something new isn't easy but I'm glad I had the chance to use Adobe Illustrator and After Effects, now I have new skills unlocked which I think could be beneficial for future use. And also not to mention, the importance of sketches - usually my end product looks nothing like my sketches but I've learnt that sketches really helps in idealizing my end product. I observed that I learn a lot by watching Ms Jennifer's tutorial videos as there are many functions in Adobe Illustrator that I do not know but by watching her illustrating in the software, I get to see which tools she use that I do not use and it made my life easier because I didn't know we could do that in Illustrator.
